It all started during early 1978. On a sunny morning either of January last week or February first week, my telephone started ringing. At that time I was sitting in the sunny lawns of my Patna house, completing some article which was to be sent to “Dharamyug,” Mumbai, the same evening to catch the dateline. During those days, I was practically jobless, as I was unceremoniously removed from the service by the management of “Pradeep” and “Searchlight” (a Hindustan Times Group Publication) where I was a special correspondent, for my frank and fearless writing in favour of JP movement and against imposing of emergency by Smt. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India.

We are thrilled to share the highlights of the Four-Day Capacity Building Programme on Post-Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) and Long-Term Recovery, being organized in collaboration with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) and the International Institute of Security and Safety Management (IISSM) at SIRD Conference Hall, Kohima, from November 26-29, 2024.

The program commenced with insightful sessions led by key dignitaries, Dr. P. K Das, Independent Health Expert and Dr. Avneet Randhawa from the Punjab Government joined as the Housing and Health Sector Expert, providing expertise on assessing housing and health-related needs during post-disaster recovery. Prof Santosh Kumar, CEO, IISSM – International Institute of Security & Safety Management, presented on the Education Sector, Roads and Bridges Sector and Recovery and Reconstruction. He also deliberated on the Pre-disaster context and Baseline data.

Participants also engaged in a dynamic field visit to reinforce their learning. Divided into four groups, they conducted sectoral assessments based on a practical case study provided during the training. This hands-on approach allowed participants to critically analyze real-world challenges in sectors such as health, infrastructure, education, and housing, creating deeper insights into effective disaster recovery planning.

Under the visionary leadership of Shri RK Sinha, Executive Chairman of IISSM, this program aims to equip participants with robust capabilities to create resilient communities.
